Story-driven turn-based RPG Shadow of the Road, developed by Another Angle Games and published by Owlcat Games, is set to launch in 2026 for PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.

Set in an alternate vision of 1868 Japan, Shadow of the Road unfolds during a pivotal civil war between the traditionalist forces of Shogun Tokugawa and the technologically advanced army of Emperor Mutsuhito, backed by the British East Nippon Company. The conflict plays out in a world where ancient magic, yōkai, and spiritual traditions coexist uneasily with steampunk machinery and rapid industrialization, shaping both the landscape and the fate of the empire.
The narrative follows a dangerous mission initiated by Tokugawa’s spymaster, tasking the rōnin Satoru and Akira with protecting a mysterious child whose immense powers threaten to spiral out of control. As the journey progresses, additional allies with distinct backgrounds, motivations, and personal struggles join the group, with relationships and moral decisions influencing how events unfold. Choices made throughout the story can forge alliances, strain loyalties, or permanently alter personal bonds.
Combat is built around classic turn-based tactics with a samurai-inspired approach, where positioning, abilities, and character dynamics play a central role. Social relationships and individual ambitions directly affect performance in battle, blending narrative and strategy into a cohesive experience. With its emphasis on choice-driven storytelling, tactical depth, and a richly imagined setting caught between tradition and modernization, Shadow of the Road aims to deliver a focused, narrative-heavy RPG when it arrives on PC in 2026.
