Action RPG Outward 2 is slated to release in Q3 2026, developer Nine Dots Studio and publisher Nine Dots Publishing have reaffirmed alongside the release of a new feature video offering an extended look at the game’s design philosophy and systems. The game is set to launch in Early Access via Steam.

In the newly released video, Nine Dots CEO, founder, and creative director Guillaume Boucher-Vidal explains that Outward 2 once again places players in the role of an ordinary adventurer navigating the hostile world of Aurai. Rather than power fantasy, the experience emphasizes preparation, restraint, and adaptability, with the environment itself acting as a constant threat. According to Boucher-Vidal, many of the sequel’s systems were shaped by lessons learned during the development of the original Outward, particularly the importance of consequence-driven gameplay.
The feature video highlights several expanded mechanics, including a full seasonal cycle that impacts resources, wildlife behavior, and traversal, as well as roaming NPCs that reinforce the sense of a living world. Combat and character progression are designed to reflect player behavior over time, with skills and passive abilities evolving based on how challenges are approached rather than through rigid class structures. Additional customization options allow players to influence their starting conditions, appearance, and long-term development paths.
Outward 2 continues to frame survival as an ongoing struggle. Hunger, fatigue, harsh weather, and limited resources must be managed alongside combat encounters that reward planning over reflexes. Defeat does not simply reset progress, as being knocked out can lead to injuries, loss of gear, or unexpected narrative outcomes. Cooperative play remains a core component, with both online and split-screen options supported, allowing two adventurers to endure Aurai’s dangers together.
