Step back into the chaos—only this time, it’s louder, wilder, and way more neon. Neon Abyss 2 expands the frantic roguelike formula of its predecessor with multiplayer madness, richer systems, and a freshly glitched-out cyber-aesthetic that pops with pixel-perfect style. Even in Early Access, it’s clear that this sequel isn’t just aiming to iterate—it’s set to surpass.
Run ‘n’ Gun Mayhem
You return to the Abyss, but the rules have changed. Framed within a surreal tech-fantasy world full of cracked pixels and shifting synths, Neon Abyss 2 feels like stepping into a corrupted arcade cabinet—only the stakes are real, and the vibes are immaculate. You’re still part of the Black Dog squad, but now the Abyss itself is more alive and unpredictable than ever. Each run feels like a descent into a chaotic digital underworld, buzzing with energy, color, and mythological data fragments. It’s a setting that’s both familiar and strangely alien.
Neon Abyss 2 blends classic roguelike structure with twitchy twin-stick shooter action—with a twist. Weapons are soulforged, crystals are currency, and eggs hatch into little beasties that fight for you. Between grenades blowing up stone walls, teleportation portals, and synergy-stacked item pickups, there’s never a dull room in the Abyss. You’ll also find temporary utility items—like ladder repair kits or lamps—that reshape your traversal options mid-run, adding puzzle-like layers to the action.
While the default twin-stick control scheme (manual aiming with the right stick) is an option, I found the single-stick layout—where movement and aiming are combined on the left stick with auto-aim on the right—far more intuitive. Once that’s done, the rhythm of movement and shooting settles into an intense flow—especially once you start stacking items and discovering insane weapon synergies. Whether you’re firing poison plants, slashing with sabers, or commanding dragon-shaped companions, the depth of experimentation is highly satisfying. And I haven’t even mentioned how challenging and rewarding the boss fights can be. Every death kicks you back to the hub, where you can unlock upgrades, adjust loadouts, and tweak systems to prepare for the next descent. After all, in Neon Abyss 2, death is just a battery swap—a quick recharge before diving back into chaos.

Style Meets Substance, Performance Still a Work in Progress
From the moment you enter the hub world, Neon Abyss 2 throws color at your face—hot pinks, electric blues, vaporwave violets. It’s unmistakably stylized, leaning into that pixelated cyberpunk flair with full confidence. The soundtrack is just as much of a standout, layering retro house and synthwave into a pulse-pounding backdrop for your chaos.
Performance-wise, the build we tested ran mostly smooth, but some mild hitches were noticeable during hectic encounters. It’s not game-breaking, but it’s definitely something that deserves attention—especially in a game that demands precise dodges and quick reflexes—and it’s an area the developers will want to polish.
Preliminary Thoughts
Even in its Early Access form, Neon Abyss 2 already feels like a confident step forward. The inclusion of 4-player online co-op adds an entirely new dimension to progression and build strategies. Whether you’re syncing up combat roles or independently tearing through different wings of a map, it never loses its rhythm. There are still systems in development—performance and the multiplayer aspects could use further polish, and not every special room or item feels fully realized—but what’s here is already highly replayable and full of promise.
Neon Abyss 2‘s pixel art is bolder, the music is punchier, and the mechanics offer more chaos to master. As a roguelike with ambition and style, it’s already lighting up the Abyss—and we’re excited to see how far this rabbit hole goes by 1.0.
