Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Santa Monica Studio have officially announced God of War Laufey, a new mainline entry in the action-adventure franchise coming exclusively to the PlayStation 5. The title centers on Laufey (Faye), a legendary Jotnar warrior and the late wife of series protagonist Kratos. A specific release window was not provided during the initial announcement.

Laufey‘s narrative explores the afterlife of the gods, a transcendent realm known as the Everywhen where magic originates and returns. Awakening unexpectedly following her funeral, Faye discovers that her pre-planned protections for Kratos and her son, Atreus, are in jeopardy. To defend them, she must navigate a volatile territory populated by rival deities from various global mythologies.
The story introduces two new companions: Phranque (voiced by Jack Quaid), a cosmic cube dedicated to guarding the domain’s inhabitants, and Rue (voiced by Perlina Lau), an enchanted ribbon tasked with protecting a powerful sword that Faye eventually wields. Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye, leading the project under the direction of Game Director Ariel Lawrence.
Gameplay mechanics are designed to merge the aerial fluidity and high mobility of the franchise’s Greek era with the tight, intimate third-person combat and character-focused world-building of the modern Norse era. Faye’s combat capabilities emphasize speed and momentum, allowing her to transition seamlessly between ground and mid-air attacks.
Additionally, leveraging her status as the Golden Hand of the Jotnar, players can utilize unique soul-manipulation powers. This includes an aggressive palm strike capable of detaching an enemy’s soul from their body, opening up opportunities for specialized direct attacks and combo extensions.
