The atmospheric puzzle-adventure game Helix: Descent N Ascent will launch on May 21 for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, developer Badass Mongoose has announced alongside a brand-new release date trailer highlighting the game’s distinctive monochrome world and puzzle-driven gameplay.

The newly released trailer offers another look at the title’s striking black-and-white presentation and the mysterious journey awaiting players. It teases the surreal environments, symbolic imagery, and shifting landscapes that define the game’s exploration-focused design while also showcasing the unique mechanics players will rely on to progress through the world.
In Helix: Descent N Ascent, players navigate a mysterious realm where ancient powers awaken within the protagonist. The experience centers on environmental puzzles and traversal challenges that evolve as players unlock new abilities. These powers can be combined in different ways, allowing multiple solutions to obstacles and encouraging experimentation across interconnected areas.
One of the game’s defining elements is the constant presence of a shadowy counterpart that mirrors the protagonist. This dark figure actively interferes with progression, creating both mechanical challenges and narrative tension as players attempt to unravel the deeper meaning behind the world they inhabit.
The game tells its story without traditional dialogue, instead relying on visual storytelling and environmental cues to convey its themes. Through exploration and puzzle solving, players gradually uncover fragments of a narrative touching on identity, duality, isolation, and fractured relationships.
Visually, the game adopts a striking monochrome aesthetic inspired by classic black-and-white indie comics from the 1980s, 1990s manga, and vintage Franco-Belgian comic art from the 1970s. Detailed 2D scenery and painterly compositions emphasize the contrast between light and darkness, giving the world a distinctive visual identity. The atmosphere is further enhanced by an original soundtrack composed by Jim Guthrie, known for his work on Sword & Sworcery, Nobody Saves the World, and Below.
Last month, players were able to experience a preview of the game through a playable demo released on PC via Steam as part of Steam Next Fest. That demo introduced the core mechanics and puzzle systems while offering a brief glimpse into the mysterious world players will fully explore when the game launches on May 21.
