Publisher Xbox Game Studios and developer Playground Games have announced that Fable will launch this fall for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. The PlayStation 5 version marks a newly confirmed platform for the long-running franchise. The game will also be available day one via Game Pass.

Reimagined as a full reboot, Fable represents a “new beginning” for the series, giving Playground Games the freedom to rebuild Albion without being bound to the timeline or characters of the original trilogy. While clearly inspired by Lionhead’s classics, the developers emphasize that this is a distinct interpretation shaped by Playground’s own identity.
Set in a fully open world, players step into the role of a Hero whose choices and actions define both reputation and consequence. Albion is presented as a living fairytale realm—intimate rather than epic fantasy—blending whimsical storytelling, moral ambiguity, and distinctly British humor. From battling bandits and mythical creatures to forging a civilian life through jobs, relationships, and property ownership, the game encourages players to shape their own version of heroism.
Combat builds on the franchise’s traditional mix of melee, ranged, and magic, evolving it into a fluid “style-weaving” system that allows seamless transitions between different combat approaches. Encounters are designed around varied enemy groups, emergent interactions, and environmental reactions, reinforcing both strategy and humor during fights.
A major pillar of the reboot is the redesigned morality and reputation system. Instead of a simple good-versus-evil scale, player actions—especially those witnessed by NPCs—form localized reputations that influence how different settlements perceive and respond to the Hero. These reactions can affect social interactions, romance, pricing, and overall treatment by the world, ensuring consequences feel personal and contextual rather than absolute.
Albion itself is populated by over 1,000 persistent NPCs, each with routines, personalities, and roles within their communities. This “Living Population” system underpins the game’s social simulation, creating towns that are not only visually detailed but functionally alive.
More details on story, cast, and additional systems are expected ahead of launch as Playground Games continues to share updates leading into the game’s release window this fall.
